Center for Voting
and Democracy

Matthew Cossolotto played a prominent role in the formation and organization of the Center for Voting and Democracy. In 1992, he was elected as the organization's founding president and board chair and served in those capacities for over four years. The Center's current president is John Anderson, a former Republican Member of Congress who ran as an independent candidate for President of the United States in 1980. Mr. Cossolotto currently serves as President of Ballot Services USA -- an election services consulting company. He continues to serve on the Center for Voting and Democracy's four-member Executive Committee.

The Center for Voting and Democracy researches and disseminates information on electoral systems that promote voter participation and fair representation -- primarily the broad range of proportional systems that allow most voters to elect candidates of their choice.

The Center's mission is founded on the belief that implementing proportional voting systems at all levels of government would, ensure fairer representation of our society's diversity in elected bodies, and assist local, state and national governments in their efforts toward solving the complex and contentious issues facing our nation.

The Center's primary projects are:

To produce and widely disseminate written materials, including brochures, a quarterly newsletter and annual surveys of electoral reforms and elections;
To form coalitions of individuals and organizations to seek local, state and national commissions to examine voting systems and other electoral reforms;
To provide information about proportional voting systems to communities seeking to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act;
To provide technical assistance in implementation of proportional systems;
To build a comprehensive and up-to-date resource library on the history of voting systems and their use in the United States and around the world;
To present annual Champions of Democracy awards;
To work with electoral reformers from other nations through creation of an International Advisory Board and travel exchanges.

The Center is governed by a broadly representative, sixteen-member Board of Directors and is a 501(c)(3) educational organization.
